Tewün and the Hurlingham Open Champions Jacket

THE HURLINGHAM POLO OPEN

The Champions Jacket

The Hurlingham Club was founded in 1888 by the Anglo-Argentine community. Polo was first played in Argentina on its fields. The Argentine Polo Association was born inside its walls. Since 1893, the Hurlingham Open has been the oldest polo tournament in the world and the second jewel of the Argentine Triple Crown, after the Argentine Open at Palermo.

Its Court No. 1, the Lewis Lacey, is the oldest polo field in the country, with over 130 years of history. The greatest players in the sport have competed here.

Ruso's connection to the club is personal. His family has belonged to Hurlingham for generations. As a boy, school-year weekends were often spent inside its grounds with his cousins. It was never a place his family visited. It was part of who they were, long before polo took him to Europe and Patagonia brought him home.

When Pepe Santamarina, president of the Hurlingham Club, approached Ruso to create the Champions Jacket, there was no brief, no tender, no other brand considered. It was a direct and personal recognition: the only designer who had grown up inside these walls, played polo across five countries, and returned to build a brand from the land itself.

The conversation was honest. Ruso told him: I make outerwear for the field, for work, for life. I don't make traditional blazers. But what I can do is design something that young players will actually want to wear, something they'll carry with them around the world and feel proud to put on at any event. A jacket that makes the winners ambassadors of Argentine polo and the Hurlingham Open, wherever they go.

That became the design direction. Not a formal blazer. A modern, wearable jacket with the soul of the institution woven into it.

Inside the Hurlingham Club, preserved behind glass, hangs the original Club House Jacket from sixty years ago. Bold stripes in the club's colors: deep blue, burgundy, and gold. Ruso saw it and knew what the lining had to be. The Champions Jacket carries the Hurlingham Club crest embroidered on the outside and the original Club House stripes recreated on the inside. The players carry the colors of the Hurlingham Club wherever they go, even when the jacket is closed and no one can see them. The tradition is on the inside.

Since 2021, Tewün has been the only brand entrusted with creating this jacket.

Every year, before the final, a private lunch is held to honor one or two players who won the Hurlingham Open in years past, before the Champions Jacket existed. Each receives a jacket with a personalized interior label recording the years they were champions. It is a recognition of what they achieved and a way of weaving their history into the garment they never had the chance to wear. Each year, different players who made history in the Open are honored this way.

This is not a sponsorship. It is a cultural appointment. The Champions Jacket is not something you buy. It is something you earn.

Tewün is the only brand entrusted with creating it.
